If you have any problems with the registration process or your account login, please. Do you have an Alerton front end? Or is it something else? If your system is running one of the multiple variations of Alerton software, (Envision, ABS, Compass) then you can always use the VLC DDC editor and fat finger code into the controllers if you really really want to learn how programming sequences work. Visual Logic is just fluff anyways for these new fangled younguns to program with blocks and the people who have little business in programming to use anyhow. Even with a licensed copy of software, you'll still need a copy of Visio as well. If you're running your VLC's under another system like Niagara or some other vendors software, then yes, the software is proprietary from Alerton.
You'll need to purchase it from your local Rep since Alerton is fairly strict on their dealers territories, or at least they were in the past. IMHO, if you paid a contractor to come out to your building and they did not fix the problem, I would assume that any reputable Alerton dealer would stand behind their product and work. I'm sure they would be more than happy to send another technician out to actually solve the problem rather than tarnish their reputation without charge as long as it's related to the original issue at hand. FYI, word on the street through the rumor mill is that Alerton's version of Niagara 4 is supposed to have a Tux driver and also be able to launch Visual Logic from workbench or something of that sort giving end users the ability to forgo the compass workstation or other versions of Alerton's software.
